Deer Hair Midge

A quick little deer hair midge that pushes all the buttons. Not only a great fishing pattern but also a couple of nice techniques with deer hair and a very simple CDC parachute hackle wing.

Deer Hair Midge materials:

  • Hook: Mustad C49S # 16 or smaller
  • Tying thread: Sheer 14/0 Tan
  • Tail / wing case: 10-12 deer hairs
  • Body: 3 moose main hairs
  • Wing/parachute hackle: 1 CDC puff
  • Thorax: Olive Brown superfine dubbing

  1. This is a great looking fly! The look of the wound moose mane is terrific. However, I’m curious to know why you choose to tie in the CDC by the tips instead of the butt. It seems to me the butt would be easier to catch with the tying thread.

    1. Hi, thanks, if you try my way and then the way you suggest to tie in the CDC puff, you will see how much easier finishing the fly is my way, its not by accident I do it this way!

    1. Tied in my way the stem holds all the CDC fibres in place while you finish the fly. Tied in the other way the CDC fibres are all over and more difficult to tame while finishing. I do it this way just out of tying many and developing the best way to tie it!
