Adult blue damsel dry fly

It’s soon that time of year again! This adult blue damsel is a semi realistic but easy pattern to tie. If you are on the water and the fish are taking them they can be extremely selective, so having a couple of these in your box can be rewarding.

Adult blue damsel materials:

  • Hook: Mustad R 30 # 12
  • Thread: Sheer 14/0 Black
  • Detached body: Braided backing line coloured
  • Wings: 2 dun cock hackles
  • Thorax: 2mm blue foam & Blue ice dubbing
  • Hackle: Grizzle dyed blue

  1. This is a beautiful fly! And so realistic compared to photographs of actual blue damsels! My trouble is that I haven’t seen any of these at the streams I fish. I also don’t have any of that blue foam or beautiful, blue-dyed grizzly hackle.

    1. Although they are found on rivers they are mostly associated with still waters. The blue foam is just from a hobby shop and the braid is 1mm fly line backing.
