Quick and useful hackle technique

This guide outlines a simple and effective method for preparing and applying hackle for traditional collar fly-tying. By carefully managing the hackle stripping and wrapping process, you can ensure a clean, professional result.

Heres a quick and useful hackle technique that can be used for all types of hackle.

Step 1: Preparing the Hackle

  1. Choose Your Hackle: Select a suitable hackle for your fly type.
  2. Strip the Barbs:
    • Remove the barbs from both sides of the rachis (stem).
    • On the leading edge (the side that wraps first), strip a bit more. This ensures a smooth, stable wrap around the hook shank.

Step 2: Wrapping the Hackle

  1. Positioning:
    • Aim for a 90° angle between the hackle and the hook shank.
    • Begin by locking the hackle stem to the hook shank by wrapping from left to right, then secure it by wrapping right to left.
    • Lock the hackle behind and in front to maintain the desired position.
  2. Trimming the Hackle Stem:
    • Ensure the hackle stem is trimmed to the correct length relative to the hook eye.
    • Avoid cutting the stem too short, as this may destabilize the foundation and cause the hackle to twist or fall.

Step 3: Applying the Hackle

  1. Using a Hackle Pliers:
    • Attach the hackle pliers to the hackle tip.
    • For precise control, a rotary hackle plier is recommended.
  2. Positioning for Wrapping:
    • The extra stripped leading edge allows you to position the hackle accurately before the barbs start wrapping.
  3. Wrapping:
    • Begin wrapping the hackle forward in even turns, with each turn placed in front of the previous one.
    • Lock the hackle securely after completing the wraps.

Step 4: Finishing the Hackle

  1. Securing the Wraps:
    • Fold the barbs back and make a few securing turns of thread at the base.
    • Use a whip finisher to lock off the thread.
  2. Trimming:
    • Turn the vice to avoid cutting unintended areas.
    • Use fine-tip scissors to trim any stray barbs and excess stem.
