fly tying Black Martinez nymph

How to tie Black Martinez nymph

One of the first nymphs I ever tied and fished with. Although this has the appearance of a modern nymph it was first tied back in the early 1930’s by Don Martinez from California. A great generic nymph that has taken many fish for me over the years.

  1. I’ve been wanting to tie this fly and use it on a stream I frequent that does very well for me on black nymphs. However, I have been short some of the materials. Looking around for other pattern versions, I found some with reasonable substitutions (Swiss Straw in lieu of Antron yarn, French Oval tinsel in lieu of copper wire) and some with undesirable ones (Pheasant Tail barbs in lieu of Guinea, Partridge hackle in lieu of Grizzly Hen). And now I have the missing Large Dot Guinea and chartreuse Antron yarn … so here I go!
